vain conceit

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit..."

This may not resonate with many of you, but Philippians 2:3 pierced through all the fleshy stuff straight to my heart this morning. It's one of those verses I usually read & say, "Oh, that's not talking to me."

Well, after diving a little deeper...yea...I'm pretty sure, actually I am certain, that Paul is talking directly to me.

Vain conceit is better translated as empty conceit. It comes from the Greek word kenodoxia. Keno means empty or hollow. Doxa means glory, praise or opinion.

Helloo, Ashley. Many, many things that I do have a hidden motive. I want other people to think highly of me. I want people to like me. I want people to want speak well of me. Because I am broken, I am a slave to doing out of "vain conceit."

Thankfully, I serve a Savior that wants to set me free. In fact, He has already died to set me free.

Lord, help us to embrace freedom today.
